September in Fort Bend County is still A/C season, and the searches show it: "how much does it cost," "how long does it take," and "half of my car A/C is not working." Straight answers, based on what comes through our bays in Missouri City.
How much does car A/C repair cost?
Diagnosis with a recharge and UV dye, so we can see where the refrigerant is going: $150–$250. From there it depends on what failed. A condenser (the radiator-looking part up front that catches every rock on Highway 6): $450–$900 installed on most cars. A compressor: $900–$1,800, more on European cars. A blend-door actuator (the little motor that decides hot or cold): $250–$600 depending on how buried it is. A cabin air filter, which is the cheapest reason for weak air: under $80. We give you the written number before anything is replaced.
How long does it take?
Diagnosis and recharge: same day, usually two to three hours. A condenser: one day. A compressor: one to two days, because the system has to be flushed and the receiver-drier replaced with it or the new compressor fails. Evaporator jobs that require the dash to come out: two to three days. Call ahead and we will tell you the current wait.
Why is only half of my A/C cold?
Driver's side cold, passenger side warm, or vice versa, on a car with dual-zone climate: almost always a blend-door actuator on one side, or the system is low on refrigerant and the far side of the evaporator is starving first. Cold at highway speed but warm at a stop: the condenser fan is not running when there is no airflow. Cold for ten minutes, then warm: the evaporator is icing over, usually a low charge or a bad temperature sensor. Each of these is a different repair, so the "which half, and when" detail is the most useful thing you can tell us.
Why a can from the parts store usually does not hold
Refrigerant does not get used up. If it is low, it left through a leak, and the can will leave the same way — often taking a stop-leak additive with it that we then have to flush out. A dye recharge finds the leak once.
