The Check-Engine Light: What It Actually Means (and What It Doesn't)

A check-engine light is a message, not a verdict. The engine computer has seen a reading it doesn't like and stored a code. What that code means for you ranges from "tighten the gas cap" to "stop driving." Here is how we sort it.

Steady vs. flashing

A steady light means the fault has been logged and the car is compensating. Drive it, but book a diagnostic within the week. A flashing light means an active misfire that can dump raw fuel into the catalytic converter and destroy it in miles, not months. Pull over, and call us.

Why a code is not a diagnosis

A P0420 says the catalyst is under-performing. It does not say why. On the cars we see it is more often an exhaust leak, a lazy oxygen sensor, or a misfire upstream than a bad converter. Replacing the part the code names is how people spend $1,800 to fix a $180 problem. Our diagnostic reads the code, then tests the circuit and the live data to find the cause before we quote anything.

Loose or worn gas caps and evaporative-system leaks (Houston heat is hard on rubber); ignition coils and plugs past their interval; oxygen sensors on cars over 100,000 miles; mass-airflow sensors on turbocharged European engines; and thermostat or coolant-temperature faults on cars that sit in traffic on Highway 6.
